After this lesson you can find the words in a question that tell you where to look in a text.
Mini lesson
A keyword is a word in the question that carries the meaning. Names, places, numbers, dates and unusual nouns are the easiest keywords to find again in a text. Small words such as 'the', 'is' or 'of' are not keywords, because they appear everywhere.
Strategy
- 1.Read the question and underline 1-3 words that carry the meaning.
- 2.Prefer words that are hard to change: names, places, numbers, dates.
- 3.Scan the text for those words, or for a word with a similar meaning.
- 4.Read only the sentence around the keyword to find the answer.
Example
Question: 'What time does the library close on Sunday?' Keywords: library, close, Sunday. In the text you look for 'Sunday' first, because a time and a day are easy to spot.

Reading passage
Riverside Community Library
Riverside Community Library is on Mill Street, next to the bus station. The library opens at 9 a.m. from Monday to Friday and closes at 8 p.m. On Saturday it opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. The library is closed all day on Sunday.
Adults can borrow up to eight books for three weeks. Children under 12 can borrow six books for the same period. If you return a book late, you pay 20 cents for each day. Members can renew a book twice online, but a book that another reader has requested cannot be renewed.
The study room on the first floor has 24 desks and is quiet at all times. Groups who want to talk should use the meeting room on the ground floor, which must be booked at the front desk at least one day before.
