After this lesson you can find the subject, the verb and the main idea of a long sentence.
Mini lesson
Long sentences are easier when you find the subject (who or what) and the main verb (the action) first. Extra parts between commas usually add detail. You can read them second.
Strategy
- 1.Find the main verb of the sentence.
- 2.Ask: who or what does this verb? That is the subject.
- 3.Ignore the parts between commas or brackets on your first read.
- 4.Read those extra parts again only if a question asks about the detail.
Example
'The museum, which opened in 1912, closes early on public holidays.' Subject: the museum. Main verb: closes. Main idea: the museum closes early on public holidays. The date 1912 is only extra detail.

Working from home
Many companies, especially those with staff in different cities, now allow employees to work from home for part of the week. Employees who work at home often say they save time because they do not travel, and some report that they concentrate better in a quiet room.
However, working at home is not easy for everyone. New employees, who usually learn by watching other people, may feel lost without a colleague nearby. Managers also find it harder to notice when a person in their team is struggling.
